  • Center [3]

The CITRIS Climate Navigator is a new Web-based, interactive tool that builds a virtual community of policymakers, businesspeople, and scientists searching for practical solutions in energy production, distribution, and use leading to a prosperous, low-emissions future.
• The Climate Navigator Wiki provides an aggregating emphasis on technology, models, domain knowledge, and roadmapping.
• The Modeling Portal presents climate policy models, their results, and their differences in a clear, transparent format accessible to all.

Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society — CITRIS [6]

rashida | Nov 10, 2009, 12:12 pm  |
  • Center [3]

The Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society — CITRIS — creates information technology solutions for many of our most pressing social, environmental, and health care problems.

CITRIS was created to“shorten the pipeline” between world-class laboratory research and the creation of start-ups,larger companies, and whole industries.

Soil organic matter dynamics during 80 years of reforestation of tropical pastures [15]

  • density fractionation [18]
  • nitrogen-15 [19]

  • secondary forests [21]
  • succession [22]

Our research takes advantage of a historical trend in natural reforestation of abandoned tropical pastures to examine changes in soil carbon (C) during 80 years of secondary forest regrowth. We combined a chronosequence approach with differences in the natural abundance of 13C between C3 (forest) and C4 (pasture) plants to estimate turnover times of C in the bulk soil and in density fractions. Overall, gains in secondary forest C were compensated for by the loss of residual pasture-derived soil C, resulting in no net change in bulk soil C stocks down to 1m depth over the chronosequence.

Impacts of Climate Change on Residential Electricity Consumption: Evidence from Billing Data [39]

This study simulates the impacts of higher temperatures resulting from anthropogenic climate change on residential electricity consumption for California. Flexible temperature response functions are estimated by climate zone, which allow for di®erential e®ects of days in di®erent temperature bins on households' electricity consumption. The estimation uses a comprehensive household level dataset of billing data for California's three investor-owned utilities (Paciific Gas and Electric, San Diego Gas and Electric, and Southern California Edison).

THE LUMINA PROJECT [48]

Premise
The notion of “productive use” is often invoked in discussions about whether new technologies improve productivity or otherwise enhance commerce in developing-country contexts. It an elusive concept, especially when quantitative measures are sought. Improved and more energy efficient illumination systems for off-grid

Why Do Companies Rent Green? Real Property and Corporate Social Responsibility [54]

John Quigley [55]  | Nov 23, 2009, 8:08 am

This paper provides the first systematic analysis of the choice by organizations to occupy green office space. We develop a framework of ecological responsiveness, and we formulate five propositions to explain why specific firms and industries may be more likely to lease green space. We test these propositions by analyzing the decisions of more than 11,000 tenants to choose office space in green buildings or in otherwise comparable non-green buildings located nearby.

Doing Well by Doing Good? Green Office Buildings [60]

John Quigley [55], Naeem Zafar [61]  | Sep 28, 2009, 16:16 pm

This paper provides the first credible evidence on the economic value of “green buildings” – derived from impersonal market transactions rather than engineering estimates. We analyze clusters of certified green and nearby buildings, establishing that  “rated” buildings command substantially higher rents and selling prices than otherwise

identical buildings.
